Two Days ago Google finally took the curtains off the highly awaited Nexus 5 and the latest version of the Android operating system popularly known as KitKat after the famous chocolate brand. Though there is very little known right now about the features and the actual release date as an OTA for Nexus and other supported devices, but what we know from the announcement yesterday is that Android 4.4 KitKat supports even the mid-range and low end smartphones. Like I said there is no exact release date available but it is expected to appear as an OTA in coming few weeks, at least that’s what Google Senior Vice President, Sunder Pichai, said. Let’s get down to business and look at the devices that will get all chocolaty and taste the flavor of Android KitKat.
Newly released Nexus 5 will be the first to be running on the Android 4.4 version and will be running on KitKat straight out of the box. But obviously many of you reading out now own a Nexus device or some other Android flagship and are desperate to find out if your device will be getting the treat as well. So I will not make you wait longer to find out. Senior VP Google singled out Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 to get the Android 4.4 updates in the first phase of the updates. However the Google Play edition of Samsung Galaxy S IV and HTC One will also get the treat along with the mentioned Nexus devices in the near future.

Nexus devices to get the Android 4.4 KitKat update:
  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 7
  • Nexus 10

Sadly no news regarding the Kitkat update for Galaxy Nexus or the ageing Nexus S.
Other Flagships:
  • Samsung Galaxy S IV (Google Play Edition)
  • HTC One (Google Play Edition)
Apart from these two versions other than the Nexus devices, there is no prior information or the release dates regarding the OTA updates for other flagships. It is solely depends on the manufacturer as the update is rolled out by them for these devices instead of Google. Well we are here expecting that all the recent flagships of this year and even the past year would get the KitKat update sooner or later. Here is a list of some of the smartphones that we believe will get the Android 4.4 update in the near future:
  • Samsung Galaxy S IV
  • Samsung Galaxy S III
  • Samsung Galaxy Note II
  • Samsung Galaxy Note III
  • LG Optimus G
  • LG Optimus G Pro
  • LG G2
  • Sony Xperia Z
  • Sony Xperia Z1
  • HTC One
  • HTC One X
  • Moto X
This list is purely based on what we believe will get the updates in the second session of the updates after the Nexus devices and Google Play edition of the S IV and HTC One will wrap up. So definitely if you own any of the above mentioned devices then you are safe and will be getting the update sooner or later. But since Google said that it supports almost every other phone it is quite surprising to see Google didn't add Galaxy Nexus to the list of the Nexus devices that will receive the immediate update.
